New York City has always been a melting pot of cultures, ethnicities, and even ideas. Whether you walk through Fifth Avenue, stand in the center of Times Square, stand in line on Broadway, or sit in Bryant Park or Central Park, you would always find crowds of people that come from different countries sharing the experiences of living in the Big Apple. Given the City’s population and diversity, it’s no wonder that New York has one of the highest number of mixed ethnic couples in the country, with high-end matchmakers offering their services to both men and women.
New York, City of Immigrants
The Big Apple’s population is composed of different ethnicities. 33% of New Yorkers identify themselves as white, 26% as black, 24% as Hispanic or Latino, and 13% identify themselves as Asians or Pacific Islanders.
In the 2013 census, it was determined that approximately 37% of New Yorkers are immigrants. This means that they are the single largest group in New York City. About a hundred years ago, when Ellis Island welcomed the concept of immigration, the dominant race to migrate in the City that Never Sleeps were Europeans. Nowadays, the largest immigrants are from the Dominican Republic, followed by China and Mexico.
The census also revealed that there are more immigrants in New York than there are people living in Chicago, Illinois. The population of Chicago is estimated to be about 2.6 million people, and that’s how many immigrants there are in New York. Also, WNYC reported that New York City holds the largest population of Chinese outside of China.
Melting Pot of the World
In 2017, the New York City Comptroller reported that there are 3.3 million foreign-born immigrants in the City. They are from more than 150 countries around the world. The top countries with immigrants comprising the biggest population in the Big Apple were the Dominican Republic, China, Jamaica, Mexico, Guyana, Ecuador, Haiti, India, Trinidad and Tobago, and Bangladesh.
There are a total of 453,176 immigrants from the Dominican Republic, which consists of 13.70% of the total number of immigrants in the whole City. The least number would be Cambodians with only 1,684 immigrants, consisting of 0.10% of the immigrant population.
Dating and the City of Immigrants
If you think about the number of immigrants and the total population of New York, you would think that finding Mr. or Miss Right would be easy. But given the many possibilities and probabilities, dating can still seem like a minefield in the Big City. But the diversity it does give singles a larger field of possible dates. It doesn’t matter if you are looking for someone with specific values, or religion; New York City has a large enough population that would match your dating profile.
Aside from online dating sites, there are matchmaking services in New York that would help you find the right one, whether its for companionship or marriage. You could still find a date the old fashioned way; go to a singles bar and look for someone who could interest you. The Big City will always give you options so you will never feel lonely in the City that never sleeps.
